What are some tips to make better prints for photography?
ahhhemitsallie asked:
I am in a photography class (we use manual cameras and make the prints ourselves).
What are some tips to make my pictures more black and white and less gray?
Its a problem I’ve been having lately…
Thanks.

Make sure negatives are probably developed. Good density and contrast.
Don’t use multicontrast papers with a properly developed negative, use graded papers. Find the paper that works best with your particular negative. Be sure to experiment with the enlarger filters too.

First you have to develop the film exactly as the chart says. If your prints are gray, that means that you are under developing the film. You can “save” them if they are not too bad buy using polycontrast paper and filters … there is a dual exposure, dual filter method that works quite well, using a #00 filter and #5 filter. Ask your instructor how to use that method … It can really make images pop is used correctly

Follow both posters above.
ASK your teacher (you’re interested), develop your film to specs or just past them and expose your negs a bit longer on the enlarger.
Good luck.

I agree with the above answers. You need to make sure you’re metering the images properly when taking them, correctly developing your film, using good paper (I once bought paper that when I’d print the images looked great, but no matter what I did they’d get foggy or light later), and use a #4 or #5 filter when printing.

If you want to increase negative contrast you can dilute the developer and increase development time. You will gain speed too but only do this with an appropriate developer.
Make sure the paper, film and chemicals are fresh.
