What are some steps I can take to try out food photography?

Sar asked:

I’m a photography student and working to become a professional photographer. I want to try out food photography and see if it’s something I want to pursue. Any advise or tips, places/books/magazines I should look at, etc???
Thanks!

Lighting and focus are crucial. The style of food shots is cyclic like fashion. Study whats being shoot now and how, observe the depth and where they place the focus. My friend does alot of food shooting and does it all on medium format for resolution. Alot of her work is blown up to poster size, so medium format is required, she used a Hassleblad H3d but found the film gave a better look for food, each to their own I guess.

I used to cruise outdoor markets and just snap away at awesome displays of various veggies and other things contrasting in colourful displays. Fish, meat, peppers, garlic,….it’s all good, and with natural light. Try it.
