How can I win a gold medal in a photography competition? I need to find a great subject for my entry! Help?
octoberbabycadi asked:
There is a photography contest which officially starts in early October/november, and I would like to win something this year. I know that the judges look for things that are bold, and are extraordinary.
However, I can’t seem to find anything that’s guaranteed for a prize.

I’m really interested in photography, so are there any websites that can give me tips for prize-winning pictures? or do you guys have any?

I started to write this answer, but am wondering if I would get to share that prize if you won it.

You need to do something totally new and very well done.
The image is going to come from your vision and heart not from a website.
Check the gallery at photo.net for inspiration though.

Do you honestly expect for one moment that this photography prize is going to be won by somebody who can not even come up with one original idea by themself?. That the ‘gold medal’ winner will be some kid who asks for ideas on Yahoo answers?.
Let me tell you now, the winner will be the kind of photographer who as well as having years of experience in photography, will have the artistic talent to come up with the concept of the image, from start to finish, by themselves.

rent a hot air balloon.
hang the camera from a rope under the balloon basket.
when the balloon gets to 1000ft use a cable release to trigger the shutter.
make sure you set your point and click camera to shoot in full auto mode with the pop up flash on and use auto focus.

You can get some ideas if you buy or find a copy of the PPofA books that show the best of the best of their contest. You will find that the type of images are all very good and detail to every part of the image and presentation are very important.

keep looking, and don’t be disappointed if you don’t win. You likely WON’t.

Keep thinking of things that you know no one else would think of.
When you see every day objects, think of any things you could do differently to make it more unique. For example, if you see a clock, think if something that would make it better and different. I have an idea in mind about that but want you to think for yourself!
You can be very , very creative if you let your mind loose and get into all the ins and outs of everything you see. If you try not to look at everything as an object, but as something more magical, then you can really turn it into photography or art.

Actually, if you know who the judges are, the secret to success is to study their likes and dislikes and shoot for them.
You may win something but your image will NOT be yours… you will be shooting for the judge.
I’ve taken Best of Show (this one: ) and numerous First Places by doing this…
I don’t compete anymore because I shoot for me, not them.
It’s nice to win competitions and nice to compete and certainly nice to get some rewards and recognition for your efforts.
