Are there any good sites for photography? Does anyone have any tips on how to make a great photo?

Nena asked:

I am on a budget and want a good camera to take really good photos (like in Popular Photography magazine). Someone suggested Kodak Z710. Is that a good camera? And does anyone have any tips on how to shoot a really great photo?

I prefer the canon’s and nikon’s over the kodak cameras, but this is just my preference. In order to take better photos you need to read up on composition and lighting and study the photos that you admire and figure out why you admire them. Composition and the ability to recognize light is more than half the battle though.

You really have to have what i call the “photographic eye”. It’s the ability to look at a normal object or situation and see something extraordinary. Not only must you see it, but you must know how to capture it on film. The Rule of Thirds is a good thing to follow, look that up on wikipedia. I follow that unconsciously now. There are many ways to produce a great photo, all very dependent on the scene and what emotion you want to portray. Sometimes you want the subject in a tiny slice of the photo, using negative space to make an impression. Other times you want a vast landscape enveloping every inch of the picture. The most useful tool I’ve found when photographing things is perspective. Try to look at a scene in ways you wouldn’t normally - instead of taking a photo of a building from the front, take one with your camera against the wall pointing straight up, etc. You can check out my own work for ideas at

And comments are always appreciated :)

As for the photography sites, i am not so sure one exists…… If you find one let me know.

As for your camera, I am partial to Nikon. However, i have found that i can take a good photo with just about any camera. Whatever you are using, simply take LOTS of pictures with it. Learn everything you can about it, and what it’s limitations are.

I used to think i had to have a Hassy or Mamiya to take good photos. But in reality, it is all up to the person operating the camera, and knowing about your camera.

The Kodak Z710, is a good camera. I would only state that whatever you end up with, you should use for a long time, so make sure you LIKE it and you are comfortable with it. Personally, i like changing lenses. If you are like me, make sure your camera has that feature, and that lenses are available for that camera……..

The above plus $5.00 will buy you a coffee at most places……
